The Belliphonic Mind

The Belliphonic Mind

«There is no document of culture that is not at the same time a document of barbarism.» – Walter Benjamin, Über den Begriff der Geschichte (1940)

A sound investigation into the acoustic memory of armed conflicts. Mannheim musician Flo Huth traced interviews, news and documentary platforms to identify the sounds associated with military violence. What sounds are attributed the quality of “war”? Starting from the term “Belliphon,” which combines the Latin bellum (war) and the Greek phon (voice), the sound of conflicts –from actual battles to everyday noises and artistic expressions from pop and media culture– emerges as its own audible world. Together with musicians and sound artists Kasia Kadlubowska, Zoé Pouri and Joss Turnbull, Flo Huth and Mikel R Nieto attempt to construct, from the gathered material and improvisation, a dialogue that approaches the subject from the perspective of memory and the immediacy of experience.
